Sudo apt-get update complains that could not be resolved. The feedback makes clear, running this command did not have any bad side-effect though.

Provided sudo apt-get update succeeds, you may proceed to (2) sudo apt-get upgradeĪctually I cannot quite imagine why you considered (1) sudo apt-get install mintupdate necessary at all.

The very first command before installing or updating software, should always be (3) sudo apt-get update, because you refresh the local copy of the list of available software packages before any other action. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.Īctually I am a bit amazed about the order in which you executed the commands: Ign trusty-updates/universe Translation-en_US Ign trusty-updates/restricted Translation-en_US Ign trusty-updates/multiverse Translation-en_US Ign trusty-updates/main Translation-en_US Get:32 trusty-updates/universe Translation-en Get:31 trusty-updates/restricted Translation-en Get:30 trusty-updates/multiverse Translation-en Get:29 trusty-updates/main Translation-en Get:28 trusty-updates/multiverse i386 Packages Get:27 trusty-updates/universe i386 Packages Get:26 trusty-updates/restricted i386 Packages Get:25 trusty-updates/main i386 Packages Get:24 trusty-updates/multiverse amd64 Packages Get:23 trusty-updates/universe amd64 Packages Get:22 trusty-updates/restricted amd64 Packages Get:21 trusty-updates/main amd64 Packages Get:11 trusty/universe amd64 Packages Ĭould not resolve '' Ign trusty-security/universe Translation-en_US Ign trusty-security/restricted Translation-en_US Ign trusty-security/multiverse Translation-en_US Ign trusty-security/main Translation-en_US Hit trusty-security/universe Translation-en Hit trusty-security/restricted Translation-en

I will be happy to provide any additional info that is needed.Ĭode: Select all ~ $ sudo apt-get update (I have set Sources back to default now.) I ran the three aforementioned commands again just now, and have included the terminal output, hoping that will be helpful in diagnosing this. I have also tried changing Software Sources and then Update Cache, but that doesn't make any difference. However, I still cannot install or update anything. That seems to have made a few improvements, because now I only have one update in the Update Manager, "libqt5gui5". After that I tried "apt-get install mintupdate" "apt-get upgrade" "apt-get update". Apt-get could not resolve, but gave me the link to the package, so I downloaded it through Firefox and manually installed it. I have managed to reinstall Mint Sources. Similar topics have led me to try a few things.

I have tried to find a solution on this forum (and Google), and I have not found anyone having the same problem. I have checked my connection settings (without changing anything) and don't see anything wrong there. Obviously, my connection is fine, because I'm writing this post. With the Software Manager, I can search and read discriptions of packages, but when I click Install on anything, I get an error that says that I need to check my internet connection. I get a lot of "could not resolve" from apt-get also, including, ,, us., etc. The update manager gives me an error saying "W: Failed to fetch." and "Could not resolve." for various servers. I cannot install the updates in Update Manager, or any software in the Software Manager, or even get new Themes.

I know my way around Windows XP and 7 quite well, but am totally new to Linux. I have just freshly installed Mint 17 Cinnamon 64bit.
